Because you’re worth it: this is how you approach your salary negotiation
Hooray, the employer is excited about you and wants you on the team. So you are almost there, just the employment interview. Exciting, because now it comes down to it: salary negotiation. This is the time to show your worth and make sure you sign on later with a good feeling. With the right preparation, you are stronger and you are sure to get what is right for you.
Step 1: determine your ideal
Before you go into the interview, you need to know exactly what you want. Think salary, but also fringe benefits such as travel expenses, days off or a pension plan. Put clearly on paper for yourself what your ideal picture is. That way, you know what you really care about and can make better choices during the interview.
Step 2: Sell your value
A negotiation is not only about what you want, but also about what you have to offer. So prepare well what qualities and results you possess. Show why you are an asset to the organization. Remember: if you sit across from them, it’s because they like you. That already gives you a strong position.
Step 3: Be flexible, but for good reason
A negotiation is rarely just about money. By including multiple points, you can shuffle and come up with an attractive overall package together. Consider training opportunities, flexible working hours, working from home or a bonus scheme. Make a list of your desires and put them in order of importance. That way you know where you can possibly add a little water to the wine, without selling yourself short.
Step 4: Set your boundaries
It is tempting to go along with the moment, but set yourself a clear limit beforehand. What is your lower limit, both in terms of salary and other conditions? By having this clear, you avoid being overwhelmed and accepting something you will regret later.
Step 5: Capture it in black and white
Verbal agreements often sound nice, but make sure everything is also confirmed in writing. Read the offer carefully and do not sign anything until you are sure it is correct with what was discussed. That way you keep your own grip and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Finally
A salary negotiation can feel exciting, but see it as the chance to stand up for yourself. Prepare well, remain professional and show your worth. Then you increase your chances of walking out the door with an offer that really makes you happy. Because you know: you are worth it.
